Sir Arthur Somervell was the first composer to set poems from “A Shrop- shire Lad”. His work is perhaps not so familiar as some of the later settings but has a particular feel that we were keen to recapture in our performance of In Summertime on Bredon. Those who know it will recognise that our arrangement is much more closely modelled on the original than some. This track features a quintet of Viola d'Amores, Harmonium and Cello.

James has been singing on the English folk music scene since the early 1970s. In 1975 he met his long term musical partner, the late Ralph Jordan, with whom he worked as the duo Silas. He was part of Crows from 1978 until 1986.
