Transportation as punishment is a frequent topic in traditional song. The Isle of France presents a different perspective reminding us that there were some who came home despite the hardships of the voyage. Not having thought about or played it for a long time James was reminded of it by a question on University Challenge!

James has been singing on the English folk music scene since the early 1970s. In 1975 he met his long term musical partner, the late Ralph Jordan, with whom he worked as the duo Silas. He was part of Crows from 1978 until 1986.
